Existence and Future of Indigenous Peoples in Taiwan

The capacity to act displayed by the first generation of Indigenous elites during the Japanese colonial period inspired the self-consciousness and actions of the Indigenous communities after the Second World War, prompting them to bravely take on the responsibility for restore the broken history.


“The Four Existence” serves as an Indigenous defence to promote the repositioning of the development of Indigenous Peoples.

The constitutional rectification and recognition of collective rights, along with the establishment of the Council of Indigenous Peoples and the legislation of the Indigenous Peoples Basic Law, are the basic framework for the Indigenous Peoples to engage in dialogues with the mainstream society and the authorities.


Socioeconomic Existence

The foundation for the survival of Indigenous communities lies in the connection between their tradition and the modern society, which means to combine their respect to nature and traditional knowledge for land use with modern technology and marketing strategies, in order to manage the mountain and forest in a sustainable way.


Cultural Existence

Revival of the Indigenous languages, values of thinking and annual rituals and ceremonies is the origin of the power of self-reinforcement, which enables the accumulation, continuation, regeneration and innovation of an ethic group’s culture.


Academic Existence

By stepping out the fields of anthropology and history, as well as extending to the fields of culture, art, social science, natural science, technology, biomedicine, and so on, a diverse academic system with Indigenous knowledge and viewpoints can be established through the research of the modernity and the future of Indigenous Peoples.


“The Two Futures” is to respond to the mainstream society and create a homeland jointly managed by non-Indigenous and Indigenous Peoples.


Pursuit of Autonomy

Re-demonstrate the capacity of self-governance for community affairs as how it was in the past.


Return of Land

By reclaiming the ancestral land rights, the Indigenous communities are able to realize the ideal of autonomy on their own land while continue to prosper and thrive.


Official Rehabilitation of Political Cases


The Transitional Justice Commission proposed the “Announcement of Revocation of Criminal Convictions for Rehabilitating Judicial Malpractice” about the past victims in succession. The announcement released on December 7, 2018, included 27 Indigenous victims, such as Uong'e Yatauyungana (Kao Yi-sheng) and Losin Watan (Lin Jui-chang).
