Victimized Teachers and Students from Tamkang High School: Difficulties faced by Tân Lêng-thong's family
After Principal Tân Lêng-thong went missing, the Taipei County government assigned an educational inspector as the acting principal. The school also provided a dormitory for the Tân family to live in. Nevertheless, without the primary source of income, the Tân family chose to grow crops, raise chickens, ducks, and pigs on available land near their dormitory to make their ends meet. In addition, with the help from friends and the Council for United States Aid, the Tân family managed to overcome their difficulties, living a very frugal life.
Despite the hardships, the children of the Tan family were very diligent. After the eldest son
graduated from Taipei Institute of Technology (today's National Taipei University of Technology), the other siblings also completed their education and began their careers; some of them left Taiwan to study abroad. The Tan family encouraged the younger generation to leave the country because, being family members of the 228 Incident victims, their identity remained sensitive, and it was difficult to foresee their future during the White Terror era.
